JoyJoy was living with her mother and grandmother in her uncle's apartment when her mother contacted SafeHome. Her uncle had decided to raise the rent, and he'd told the family to leave immediately. Joy's grandmother, who was the family's primary source of income, moved to South Carolina. Although Joy's mother, Alice, was employed as a certified nurse's assistant, she had no financial safety net and couldn't afford the initial costs of moving. Joy and Alice faced homelessness.
After convincing the uncle to let the family stay for 30 days, SafeHome found Joy and Alice a comfortable home on a family-oriented block in North Philadelphia and helped with the initial costs of housing. Now Joy is five. She has her own room and her own princess bed. She and Alice have a close relationship, and she gets along well with her teachers. Alice is feeling great about herself and her new home. She's decorated the porch with flower pots.
