The Issues

Homelessness is a significant challenge in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Office of Homeless Services reports that 16% to 18% of the city’s homeless population has been unsheltered since 2017, with the current figure standing at 18%.

This means that a significant portion of people experiencing homelessness are living in conditions unfit for human habitation. On any typical night in 2022, as many as 4,489 individuals found themselves without a proper home. The root causes of homelessness span from generational poverty, insufficient living-wage jobs, housing cost and income disparities, costly healthcare, mental health and substance use issues, to broader societal issues like racial inequality and systemic oppression.

In this context, PCEH has a pivotal role to play. By funding innovative solutions and supporting organizations that directly address these challenges, PCEH can contribute to reducing the number of unsheltered individuals, providing them with safe, stable housing and ensuring that Philadelphia moves closer to eradicating homelessness entirely.
